‘In The Absence’ (2018): Oscar Nomination for Seung-Jun Yi’s Short Independent Documentary

 

Seung-Jun Yi’s independent documentary In The Absence (2018) has been nominated for Best Documentary (Short Subject) at the 92nd Academy Awards.

Although previous documentaries have similarly assessed the sinking of the Korean ferry Sewol and the heartbreaking loss of 300 passengers and crew members, In the Absence eschews placing guilt on any particular party by exploring the event itself, using video clips and sound recordings from the day of the tragedy.
